The Boston University Music Society welcomes Professor Kofi Agawu of Princeton University as the keynote speaker for their Graduate Student Musicology Conference on Saturday, May 7 2011. Professor Agawu will present “Tonality as a Colonizing Force in African Music.” The society will also feature papers by five graduate students from around the world that discuss music as an agent of tension and/or release in its political, socio-cultural, or musical contexts. Dr. Paula Bishop and BU Professor Steven Cornelius will co-chair the proceedings. All are welcome to attend this free event, which is generously sponsored by the College of Fine Arts, Department of Musicology and Ethnomusicology, Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center, African Studies Center, and the BU Graduate Student Organization.
