Victorian Realities/Victorian Dreams
Urbana, IL, March/April 2000
A CALL FOR PAPERS: The 24th Annual Meeting of the Midwest Victorian Studies Association will be held March 31st to April 2nd, 2000 at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. The planners of MVSA 2000 have once again selected a general theme, "Victorian Realities/Victorian Dreams," to encourage proposal submissions on a wide variety of topics. This title has also been chosen to allude to a special feature of the conference which should appeal to all Victorianists: a centenary performance of Elgar's oratorio, The Dream of Gerontius, by University of Illinois musicians. While Newman and Elgar proposals are welcome, there will be a conference session devoted to Gerontius prior to the Saturday evening performance, with specially-invited speakers offering critical perspectives on both the music of Elgar and the poetry of Newman. The conference planners hope that this call for papers will primarily elicit presentations on other dreams--and realities--resulting in another wide-ranging interdisciplinary meeting. The possibilities, of course, are as numerous as the everyday realities of Victorian life, and the hopes, ideals, visions, and fantasies so richly expressed throughout Victorian culture. Proposals from all fields are most welcome. Particularly encouraged are proposal submissions which have multidisciplinary aspects or which have broad appeal across the disciplines. Prosposals for panels will be considered, provided that abstracts from all panelists are submitted together. Again, panels which represent perspectives of two or more disciplines are especially encouraged. Proposals may be submitted by post, fax, or e-mail; the deadline for submissions is October 15, 1999 (a bit sooner this year, since the meeting is scheduled three weeks earlier than usual to coincide with the Elgar performance). All proposals--which should be no more than two double-spaced pages--as well as inquiries about this meeting or MVSA membership, should be directed to: Robert Koepp MVSA Executive Secretary e-mail: email@example.com English Department -or- Illinois College fax: +1-(217) 245-3365 Jacksonville, IL 62650 USA With this call for papers, the MVSA invites all nineteenth-century scholars--throughout the Midwest and well beyond--particularly graduate students in Victorian studies, to become MVSA members and to plan to attend the meeting in Urbana-Champaign next spring. The MVSA offers graduate students dues-free membership for three years, and annually awards a dissertation research scholarship to encourage and support new interdisciplinary study in the Victorian Period.
