"Icons of Pop"

A day of activities investigating the mythology of Pop from shooting stars
to damp squibs, coinciding with the National Portrait Gallery touring
exhibition 'Icons of Pop 1958-1999'. Workshops on image making,
photography, music making and the impact of new technology on pop culture
will combine with a series of talks by pop industry practitioners and
academics.

*       Talks by academics and practitioners

1pm-2.30pm A series of illustrated talks on pop star production and
	reception.
*       '"Fargate megastars": pop stars, fandom and locality.' Josie Robson
(Dept of Cultural Studies, Sheffield Hallam University)
*       'Subversion of the pop icon in the music and cover art of Pulp's
This is Hardcore.' Nicola Dibben (Dept of Music, University of Sheffield)
*       'Celebrity, fame and modernity' Nick Stevenson (Dept of
Sociological Studies, University of Sheffield)
        
3-4pm A panel of local practioners, chaired by Mike Jones
	(Liverpool Institute of Popular Music).
Plus:
*       Workshop: musicians and image-making
*       Projected game: an installation commissioned by Lovebytes as part
of pitchbend: alternative sports and media events.
