Port of Spain, May 2001

SOCIETY FOR AMERICAN MUSIC
27th SAM Conference, Joint Meeting with the Center for Black Music Research

Call for Paper Proposals [extension of deadline]

The Society for American Music will hold its twenty-seventh conference in
Port of Spain, Trinidad, Memorial Day weekend, 23-27 May 2001. Proposals
for papers, sessions, and performances involving any aspect of music in
Canada, the United States, and the Americas are welcome. Given the rich
musical heritage of Trinidad in many types of music, the program committee
would like to encourage in particular papers, programs, or presentations
relating to the music of Trinidad and the Caribbean as well as those that
involve interdisciplinary links. Individual or joint papers should be no
longer than twenty minutes. Performances should be no longer than thirty
minutes, and may include a lecture component. In addition to papers and
performances, the Committee would like to encourage imaginative formats,
such as panels, position papers with respondents, workshops, mixed
performance/discussion sessions, and complete sessions involving particular
themes or issues.

Each submission should include:
(1)	One copy of the Proposal Cover Sheet (see separate document)
(2)	One-paragraph biography in prose
(3)	Five copies of the Abstract (include the title of the presentation,
omit the presenter's name; maximum 100 words). The Abstract must be
suitable for publication in the conference program
(4)	Five copies of the Proposal (include the title of the presentation,
omit the presenter's name; maximum 500 words)
(5)	Panel Proposals: On a single sheet provide a List of names,
institutional affiliations, email addresses, and phone numbers of all
persons on the panel. For panel sessions, or proposals involving unusual
formats, the proposer should include an additional statement explaining the
rationale for the session. Individual papers or performances in such a
session should follow the guidelines for individual submissions, but all
should be included in one envelope
(6)	Performance Proposals: For performance proposals (with or without a
lecture) please submit the Proposal Cover Sheet with five copies of the
Abstract (see number 2 above), and five copies of supporting materials,
such as audio- or videocassette tapes (where appropriate). Please note that
performances are unremunerated

Email and fax transmissions should also follow the same requirements as the
print materials. In the case of Abstracts and Proposals using many
diacritical marks, only print submissions will be accepted.

Papers may be no longer than 20 minutes, including Audio-visual
illustrations. Please record all musical examples on audiocassette tape,
if at all possible. Do not plan on computer-assisted presentations, unless
presenters supply all the equipment themselves. Performances may be not
last longer than 30 minutes. Conference presenters will appear at the
conference at their own expense. Please include two stamped, self-addressed
envelopes in the submission (for proposers in the USA).

Materials should be postmarked on or before 20 October, 2000, and should be
sent to Johann Buis, CBMR, Columbia College Chicago, 600 S. Michigan Av.,
