First Conference of the German Society for Music Theory

MUSIC THEORY BETWEEN THE HISTORICAL AND THE SYSTEMATIC

12-14 October 2001, Dresden


The first Conference of the German Society for Music Theory (Gesellschaft
für Musiktheorie) will take place in the ‘Carl Maria von Weber’
Hochschule für Musik in Dresden. The conference theme, ‘Music Theory Between the
Historical and the Systematic’, will be divided into four main thematic sections
and a round-table discussion. In addition, it will be possible to present
contributions on current research and on the teaching of music theory in a
‘free papers’ section. Proposals for papers are invited in relation to
the following themes:

- Music theory in the 20th century: between theoretical system and ‘historical
composition training’

- The teaching of ‘Satzlehre’: between pastiche and ‘free composition’

- Analysis of 20th-century music

- ‘Gehörbildung’: between training and analytical understanding

Papers should be of 20 minutes duration. The conference language is German.
Abstracts (maximum 500 words) should be sent on disk or by email (Word 6.0 or
