Following editions of the Conference in Colmar (F), Trento (I),
Montpellier (F) and Rotterdam (NL), the 5th European Music Analysis
Conference will take place in Bristol (GB), 4-7 April 2002.
	
The Conference begins at 14.00 on Thursday 4 April in the Music Department
(Victoria Rooms) of the University of Bristol. The Conference finishes at
13.00 on Sunday 7 April.

Highlights of the Conference include:

- Opening Address (Thursday 4 April) given by Prof. Arnold Whittall 
  (Emeritus Professor of Music Theory and Analysis, King's College 
  London, UK)
- Prof. Jonathan Dunsby (University of Reading, UK): Keynote Lecture 
  (Thursday 4 April) 'Derrick Puffett's Analytical Style and the 
  Evidence-Based Historiography of the Future'
- Prof. Jean-Jacques Nattiez (Université de Montréal, Canada): Keynote 
  Lecture (Friday 5 April) 'Analysing Music of the Oral Tradition: From 
  Structural Models to Hermeneutic Constructions (a Wedding Dance from 
  Uganda)'
- Prof. Dr. Clemens Kühn (Hochschule für Musik 'Carl Maria von Weber',
  Dresden, Germany): Keynote Lecture (Saturday 6 April) 'Music Theory in
  Germany: Science, Art or Practice?'
- Over 60 papers given by speakers from 22 countries throughout Europe and
  across the world. Session topics include Performance Studies, Darmstadt
  and Beyond, Theory and Metaphor, Beethoven, Oral Traditions, Analysis
  and Conductors, Music Theory in Russia, Listening/Cognition, Analysis
  and the New Technologies, German Music Theory, Analysing Early Vocal
  Music, Music in Eastern Europe, Popular Musics, Grammars.
- Round table discussion and demonstrations of The Pople Tonalities 
  Project with contributions from, among others, Prof. Anthony Pople and 
  Dr. Michael Russ (UK)
- Poster sessions
- Concert given by the Schubert Ensemble of London (Friday 5 April) of 
  music by Mozart, Fauré and Piers Hellawell. Described by Classic CD as 
  'one of the finest piano quartets performing today'
- Piano Recital given by Nicolas Hodges (Saturday 6 April) of Debussy, 
  Stockhausen and Bill Hopkins. His Royal Festival Hall performance of 
  Stockhausen's Klavierstück IX was described by the Sunday Times as 
  'riveting' 
- Book exhibition and sales, organised by Rosemary Dooley, including 
  representatives from major publishers.
- Wine reception sponsored by Blackwell Publishers.

Bristol is situated 185 km west of London, from which it is easily
accessible by rail and road. There is a frequent rail service from London
Paddington (approx. 1h 30) to Bristol Temple Meads, and the city can also
be reached by major motorway links (M4, M5) from London, the North of
England and South West England. Regular direct scheduled flights to
Bristol International Airport are available from many major European
cities.

The Conference takes place in the Victoria Rooms, in the Clifton district
of Bristol.
