The Department of Mathematics of Seconda Universita di Napoli (located in Caserta)
is organizing the Conference "Understanding and creating music" to be held in
Caserta from 21 to 25 of November, 2002.

Conference: 

The conference will consist of paper sessions, posters, panels, concerts and
social events.

Sessions:

I. Musical signals compression, sound synthesis,  fractal and genetic
algorithms, neural network
Prof. Giuseppe Di Maio

II. Analysis and musical theory
 Prof. Giuseppe Buzzanca

III. Computer aided musical composition
Prof. Giorgio Nottoli

IV. Perceptive and cognitive structures, musical psychology, and educational
aspects 
Prof. Marta Olivetti Belardinelli

The scientific programme will be scheduled on five days with four sessions. At the
end of each session there will be a final discussion, in the form of a round table
of 15 minutes.

Aims:
We encourage contributions that investigate the interplay between musical theory
and practice with tecniques and methods from cognitive psychology of music,
including computational cognitive modelling of musical processes, to musical
analysis, musical representations, algorithm methods, evaluation of musical
artefacts, computer music etc.

Submission:

INITIAL SUBMISSION PROCEDURE 
Authors are invited to submit abstract of 300 words maximum, presenting clearly
the aim of the research, the method and the results obtained. They have to provide
title, affiliation, address, phone and fax number, e-mail.

All abstracts must be submitted as *.rtf files by e-mail to:
capirelamusica.sun@unina2.it.

Notification of evaluation
October 5, 2002

Submitted abstracts will be judged on the basis of relevance, significance,
correctness, originality, and clarity. Submitted papers must be written in English
and must describe work not previously published, and must not be submitted
concurrently to a journal or to another conference.


Final SUBMISSION PROCEDURE 

After notification of abstract acceptation, authors must send the paper as
*.rtf files.by e-mail to capirelamusica.sun@unina2.it. 

Papers should be no more than 30,000 characters in length (including title,
affiliation, address, key-words, abstract). Please, send figures and plots as
attached files in *.jpg or *.bmp format. Titles, captions, comments and ordinal
numbers of figures must be sent as attached files as *.rtf files.

Authors must also send the paper in *.pdf format.

Submissions that do not conform to these requirements will be rejected without
review.

Deadline for final submission
November 5, 2002

Concert:

On 23 November 2002 there will be a concert of electronic and computer music.

We encourage musicians to send us pieces of music (preferably first performance)
recorded on cd by postal mail to following address:

Each person can present only one composition. Each composition must last between 5
and 10 minutes. Works will be accepted until exhaustion of time duration of
concert.
