"Middle Eastern and Islamic Influence on Western Art and Liturgy:
Cultural Exchanges in Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages"


We solicit 20-minute papers on such topics as:

1.	routes of influence (sea and trade routes; from Spain to Ireland and
	Britain and Irish foundations in Europe; from Syria and Anatolia
	through Aquileia to Milan and Gaul; from Sicily, Cyprus, and
	Morea; from North Africa)
2.  	documentary references (reports of travellers to and from the Middle
	East
3.	positive evidence for influence on Western literature, art, music and
	its notation, poetry, liturgy, and other material culture.

The conference will be organized as a series of round-table discussions,
in which the participants have seen each other's papers in advance.  We
intend to publish the proceedings.  Deadline for abstracts: 15 September
2003; deadline for papers: 31 December 2003.
