Distillery Jazz Festival -- Symposium 2005

Please join us for the inaugural academic symposium at the Distillery Jazz Festival
to be held in conjunction with the University of Toronto's Faculty of Music, from
May 20-22nd, 2005. The symposium and festival will be held at Toronto's historic
Distillery district, home to over forty art galleries and restaurants, and just
minutes from the city's downtown core. The focus of the 2005 festival's World Music
stream, and the focus of the symposium, is Indo-Jazz.

The Program Committee welcomes papers, organized panels, and lecture-
demonstrations on topics related to Indo-jazz including: definitions and politics of
jazz in contemporary global music-making; history of musical dialogue between
South Asian music/musicians and jazz music/musicians; issues of hegemony and
musical appropriation between Indian and jazz musics; influences of jazz in the
South Asian diaspora; or any other related topics. We especially encourage
presentation proposals from performers.

The Distillery Jazz Festival is offering two-night accommodation for out-of-town
presenters, as well as a $100 honorarium to all presenters. The weekend will include:
two evenings of performances featuring Indo-jazz performers; a full day of papers;
and a half day of open debate, demonstrations, and a final open jam with performers.

Proposals of no more than 250 words, accompanied by a 50-word bio, are requested by
15th February, 2005, and should be sent by e-mail to:

Parmela Attariwala

Participants will be informed of the Program Committee's decisions in early March.
