Arts and Aesthetics in India: 1800-2000

International Seminar organized by the Department of English, Jadavpur University, Kolkata 700032, India

Tentative dates: 17-19 November, 2005
Last date for receiving proposals: end of September, 2005

The focus of this three-day seminar, being held as part of the golden
jubilee celebrations of Jadavpur University, is on the transformations
in the theory and practice of literature and the other arts in India
in the last two hundred years. The advent of European aesthetic
thought had an important impact on the constitution and development of
aesthetic forms in our country: there have also been significant
negotiations in the way in which the arts have been theorized.
Possible areas of discussion are the negotiations between Indian and
European aesthetic ideas; aesthetics and ideology; the constitution of
aesthetic forms; changes in artistic practices; the advent of new
technology and its impact on artistic theory and practice.

Proposals for papers (35-40 minutes) are invited on the various
aspects of these processes. We hope to include papers with bearings on
as many of the arts as possible, from literature, theatre, music,
dance and the visual arts to photography and film: the emphasis will
be however on general conceptual issues rather than on individual
texts.

Selected participants will be offered local hospitality. In a limited
number of cases we will be able offer two-tier or three-tier AC train
fares within the country, though funds for this are limited.
