Preliminary Announcement

The 5th Conference "Understanding and Creating Music" UCM 2005 will be
held in Caserta (20km from Naples) from November 27 to 30, 2005,
Department of Mathematics, Seconda UniversitÓ di Napoli (located in
Caserta, very close to the celebrated Royal Palace).

The subject of the UCM 2005 is Music, investigated by different
approaches, namely:

-         Mathematics, Physics models for Music Theory and analysis
(similarity, tone systems, etc.)

-         Artificial Intelligence techniques applied to Music problems
(style recognition, unsupervised analysis etc.)

-         Cognitive Psychology of Music (including computational modelling
of musical processes, evaluation of musical artefacts, educational results

-         Linguistics and Logic models for Music

-         Algorithmic methods, sound granular synthesis etc. for Musical

-         Music performance via real-time devices and algorithmic procedures

-         Music and Fine Arts via computer graphics

-         Music and ....

The scientific programme will consist of 5 thematic sessions with plenary
lectures (invited speakers) and contributed talks. On 26 November 2005
there will be a concert of electronic and computer music.

We encourage all interested people to submit papers and music (first
performances are appreciated) for the Conference and the Concert.

A limited number of grants covering (partially or totally) the
registration fees and/or the accommodation (in shared double rooms) will
be awarded ("Nicola Ugo Stame" 2005 award). Please, send to the

Submitted abstracts will be judged on the basis of relevance,
significance, correctness, originality, and clarity. Submitted papers must
be written in English and must describe work not previously published, and
must not be submitted concurrently to a journal or to another conference.
The papers will be published (Conference Proceeding CD-ROM).

Each person can present only one composition. Each composition must last
between 5 and 8 minutes. The Artistic Committee will evaluated the
submitted music. It is compulsory to participate at the Concert, otherwise
the piece will not be played.
