A one-day conference on John Cage

Call for papers

Submission Deadline: Tuesday 1st November 2005 

The Music department at the University of Huddersfield is proud to
announce 'Hung up on the number 64', a one day conference to celebrate
aspects of John Cage's life, including his music, art, poetry and
philosophy.

The day will take place in the Department of Music on the Queensgate
Campus of the University of Huddersfield on Saturday 4th February 2006.
Huddersfield and the Department of Music are home to the Huddersfield
Contemporary Music Festival (HCMF), where Cage was featured composer and
guest of honour for the ten day long festival in 1989.

We welcome proposals for individual papers on all aspects of Cage's life,
and we encourage proposals which offer a interdisciplinary approach.

Presentations should be no longer than 20 minutes in length.

Presenters may wish to consider some of the following headings as a
starting point:

*	Cage, performers and recordings 
*	Cage and copyright 
*	Cage and 21st century composers 
*	Silent legacy 
*	Cage and dance 
*	Differences in international views on Cage (acceptability) 
*	Cage and audience perception 
*	Cage's canvas 
*	Cage and multi-cultural philosophy 

Abstracts should be no longer than 250 words and should be sent to
cagehuddersfield@yahoo.co.uk either as an attachment or text within the
body of the message. Please include any AV requirements in the email.

Deadline for submissions: Tuesday 1st November 2005

The programme will be announced before 1st December 2005. Any queries

The Keynote speaker is William Brookes (University of York, England)

The day will include performances of:
The Freeman Etudes (Book 1) performed by Mieko Kanno
Two2 performed by Rob Haskins and Laurel Karlik Sheehan
45' for a Speaker performed by Christopher Fox
A performance of Satie's Vexations will begin on Friday 3rd February to
coincide with the conference.

Presenters will have free entrance to conference, all concerts and also
coffee and wine reception. (No remuneration is provided for presenters.)
The fee for the day is 10/5 including entrance to conference, all
concerts, coffee and wine reception. Concert-only tickets 5 each or
7.50 if all booked at the same time.
