Call for Papers

To accompany the 'Kontrapunkte' programmes at the Salzburg Easter Festival
2006 of music by composers affected by the edicts of the Third Reich, an
international conference - 'Music and Resistance: 1933-1945' - is being
convened by the JMI International Centre for Suppressed Music, University
of London, and the Jewish Museum, Vienna, in co-operation with Salzburg
University.  Papers will be given in German and English. The conference
will take place in Salzburg during the Easter Festival.

The organising committee and key speakers will include

Dr Peter Tregear, University of Cambridge
Dr David Bloch, Terezín Memorial Project, University of Tel Aviv
Dr Jutta Raab Hansen, formerly of Hamburg University
Michael Haas, Music Curator, Jewish Museum, Vienna

The composers featured in this series, performed by members of the
Berliner Philharmoniker, are Pavel Haas, Karl Amadeus Hartmann, Gideon
Klein, Hans Krása, Ernst Krenek, Darius Milhaud, Constantin Regamey, Erich
Schmid, Erwin Schulhoff, Viktor Ullmann, Vladimir Vogel, Anton Webern and
Stefan Wolpe.

Proposals are invited for papers on subjects related to 'Music and
Resistance, 1933-1945' of approximately 25 minutes' duration (with an
additional 10 minutes for discussion). The deadline for the receipt of
abstracts is 15 October 2005.

Abstracts of up to 250 words for papers in German or English should be

Abstracts may be sent as attachments (in Word documents in or in Rich Text
Format) but please back up the attachment with a plain-text version in the
main e-mail. They should be accompanied by information about the author
under the following headings:

Acceptance of a proposal
will be at the discretion of the Conference Organisers. The committee will
make final decision on abstracts by 15 November 2005, and contributors
will be informed very soon thereafter. A conference website will be
available in due course; at and further
information will be posted on relevant websites and discussion
lists.  Selected papers will be published in the Almanac of the Jewish
Museum, Vienna.
