Proposals of papers are invited for an interdisciplinary symposium on
Music and Liturgy of the Medieval Irish Church, organised by Dr Ann
Buckley, Department of Music, NUI Maynooth and Rev. Prof. Liam Tracey,
Faculty of Theology, St Patrick's College, Maynooth.
While music and liturgy represent the primary focus, a broader
interdisciplinary framework is envisaged. Thus contributions are welcome
also in other areas insofar as they may provide a context for the main
theme of the symposium, for example: source materials, library and archive
holdings, palaeography, hymnology and liturgical texts, iconography,
hagiography, saints. cults, spirituality, scriptural exegesis, homilies
and penitential books, iconography, architecture and the use of space,
patronage and politics, religious orders, and institutional history.
Similarly, while the chronological span falls within a time-frame of c.700
- c.1550, papers which might address historiographic aspects, as also
critical and long-term historical perspectives, are equally encouraged.
Finally, the Irish Church is here perceived as an international body.
Therefore the Symposium is concerned with its musico-liturgical legacy not
only on the island of Ireland, but also through its missionary engagements
in Britain and in Continental Europe; the cultural contexts within which
Irish churchmen and women, and their followers, operated; and their
longer-term influence as reflected in surviving sources.
Proposals of c. 250 words should be forwarded no later than Monday, 16
January 2006 to:
