Principles of Musical Composition: The Cyclic Phenomenon
Sixth International Music Theory Conference

The purpose of the conference is to give new impulses to the development
of musicological thought, which could serve compositional practice and the
teaching process. The five preceding conferences took place in Vilnius
(Principles of Musical Composition. Theory and Practice 1999; Principles
of Musical Composition. Between Ethno and Techno 2001; Principles of
Musical Composition. Continuity and Innovation in Contemporary Music 2002;
Principles of Musical Composition. Aspects of Historical Spread 2004;
Principles of Musical Composition. Creative process 2006).

Main theme: Principles of Musical Composition. Phenomenon of a cycle 

Sub themes:

 1. Concept of a cycle. Historical stages in the spreading of cyclic
    forms
 2. Structural, semantic and cognitive aspects of cyclic forms
 3. Compositional realizations of a cyclic principle in the music of
    various epochs
 4. Phenomenon of the cycle and its transformation in the 20th ^ 21st
    centuries compositions
 5. A cycle and non-cycle (various problematic aspects)

Paper proposals may be submitted electronically or in printed format.
Electronic submissions are preferred. The abstract must not exceed 300
words. The duration of papers will be limited to 20 minutes, leaving 10
minutes for questions and discussions. Please indicate whether your
proposal belongs to one or more of the conference sub themes. Abstracts
together with short CV should be sent to:

The deadline for proposal submissions is June 4, 2006. The proposals will
be reviewed by members of the organizing committee and all applicants will
be notified of the outcome at the end of June 2006.

The main language of the conference is English.

The proceedings of the conference -- papers, summaries, discussions --
will be published.

We inform you that the 16th International Contemporary Music festival
"Gaida" (find more details at www.mic.lt) will be held on October 18-28,
2006. The participants of the conference will have the possibility to
attend the concerts free of charge.
