Improvisation: Analytical, Theoretical, and Critical Approaches

Groningen, 23-24 February 2007


On 23 and 24 February 2007, the Prins Claus Conservatorium in Groningen,
The Netherlands, will host the 9th International Conference of the
Dutch-Flemish Society for Music Theory. The conference theme is
"Improvisation: Analytical, Theoretical, and Critical Approaches".

Sessions will be devoted to improvisation in many styles, genres and
periods: from Philippine Kulintang to experimental avant-garde; from
Giulio Caccini to Wayne Shorter. Moreover, a considerable number of papers
will address issues of improvisation pedagogy. Prof. Bruno Nettl,
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, will present a keynote lecture
titled 'On the Concept of Improvisation in the World's Musics'.
