Special Symposium on Music and the Written Word

Ford Hall, Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, Bloomington, Indiana, February 23-24, 2007

Proposal deadline: December 1, 2006

The Graduate Theory Association of Indiana University's Jacobs School of
Music will be sponsoring a special symposium titled "Music and the Written
Word," to be held on Friday and Saturday, February 23-24, 2007.

Our keynote speaker will be Deborah Stein of New England Conservatory.
Other invited presenters and panelists will include Robert Green, Robert
Hatten, Marianne Kielian-Gilbert, Kevin Korsyn, Massimo Ossi, and Susan

We are currently soliciting proposals related to any topic involving text
and music, including, but not limited to, music analysis, musical meaning,
pedagogy, performance and analysis, program music, musicians as writers,
lieder studies, opera studies, and historical or musicological approaches.
Individual presentations should not exceed 25 minutes in length.
Outstanding papers given at this symposium will be considered and queued
for publication in a special topics issue of Indiana Theory Review (volume

Submissions should include:
(1) 6 copies of a 300-500 word proposal OR a single copy submitted by email.
(2) a cover letter listing the author's name, address, telephone number,
e-mail address, and affiliation, as well as all required equipment, such as
piano, overhead projector, CD player, etc.
(3) an abstract of no more than 250 words, suitable for publication in the
conference program
