Postcolonial Studies and Music
Columbia Music Scholarship Conference 2007

Columbia University, New York, 3 February 2007

We invite submissions for the fourth annual Columbia Music Scholarship
Conference, to be held on February 3, 2007, at Columbia University. The
general theme of this year's meeting will be POSTCOLONIAL STUDIES AND
MUSIC. Building on several prominent recent volumes and scholarly
meetings, this conference aims to join the investigation into the
complex matrix of global economics, imperial expansion, and racial and
ethnic difference. How has music both reflected and affected the
colonial encounter? How does the enormous body of postcolonial
scholarship in the humanities and social sciences place pressure on
traditional narratives of European music history? Where do we locate
our own academic work in contemporary formations of empire? Other
approaches to this theme might include:

- Composition in the postcolonial context
- Music and empire in the 21st century
- Colonial legacies of ethnography
- Music theory and Postcolonial theory
- Representing the colonizer, representing the colonized
- American music studies and US hegemony
- Early (European) music in a global perspective
- Performances of domination and subversion

We invite proposals for 20-minute presentations from any graduate
student whose work engages these questions. Outstanding papers
presented at the conference will be considered for publication in
Current Musicology. Submissions should include:

1. A 400 word abstract with title
2. Indication of audio-visual needs
3. The author's contact information

To ensure anonymous evaluations, please omit the author's name (or any
other identifying marks) from the abstract proper.

Proposals may be submitted electronically (.rtf or .doc only) to or mailed to:
