The Discourse of Film Music: Third Annual Film and Music Conference

National Media Museum, Bradford (formerly the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television), Friday 16th March 2007, 10.00am-6.30pm

As part of the 3rd Annual Film and Music Conference at the National Media
Museum, Bradford, David Arnold will be in interview with Professor David
Cooper (School of Music, University of Leeds) and Professor Christopher
Fox (School of Art, Brunel University), discussing his career and scores.
Arnold has written the scores for the last five James Bond films including
the recent blockbuster Casino Royale and will discuss his life and work in
the film music industry. Previous interviews with Trevor Jones (Brassed
Off!, Notting Hill, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) and Michael Nyman
(The Piano, Gattacca, The End of the Affair) have been extremely
interesting and have proven invaluable to those wishing to learn more
about the film and film music industries. The keynote interview is
scheduled at 11.00am-12.30pm.

Call for Posters

Deadline: Friday 2nd March

Posters dealing with all aspects of film music scholarship will be
considered for this symposium, and they will be on display throughout the
event. There will also be specific times in the schedule when delegates
will have the opportunity to discuss posters with those presenting them.
Anyone wishing to display a poster at the conference should email a copy
of the poster (in a standard graphic format such as bitmap, .jpeg or .gif)
along with a brief abstract explaining the premise of the research to Ian
Sapiro ( no later than Friday 2nd March. If you
have any questions or would like further information please also contact
Ian (postal address below). This conference offers an ideal opportunity
for anyone considering offering a paper for the ‘Sound, Music and
the Moving Image’ conference taking place in September at Senate
House, University of London, to present a poster showing their research to
date without having to write a conference paper at this point.

The rest of the Film Music Conference will comprise presentations by
professionals from the film-making industry on how they talk about music
and the role/impact music has on them in the film-making process. There
will also be a round-table discussion at the end of the day when the
thoughts of those present will form the basis of a discussion on film
music. The conference will end at approximately 6.30pm at which point
there will be a screening of the original The Wicker Man. Guest speakers

* Ilan Eshkeri; Composer of the scores for Layer Cake and the
soon-to-be-released Hannibal Rising;Ilan has also worked with Hans
Zimmer and Michael Kamen.

* Dr. Ian MacDonald and Garry Lyons (University of Leeds) and Erik Knudsen
(University of Salford); An experienced team of writers for stage and

* Gary Carpenter; Orchestrator of the films The Hitchhiker's Guide to the
Galaxy and The League of Gentlemen's Apocalypse, Gary has worked with a
range of top composers and was associate music editor for the original The
Wicker Man.

Application forms can be downloaded from the conference website, and the
conference fee is 10 (concession price) for the whole day, including the
interview (15 full price). Tickets can also be purchased on the day at
the Museum, but space at the interview is likely to be limited and advance
booking is strongly advised.
