Symposium: Theorizing Southern African Music: Perspectives and Conjectures

University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, 21-22 August 2007 (please note revised dates)

South African Music Project: Call for Papers

You are invited to submit a Proposal for a Symposium paper of
approximately 20 minutes reading time, addressing the theme "Theorizing
Southern African Music: Perspectives and Conjecture". The aim of the
Symposium is to explore critical theories of/on Southern African music in
the early 21st century with a view to identifying theories of particular
relevance and uniqueness in the "global south". It will be a discussion
forum rather than a conference, with ample time for debate. Presenters are
welcome from all disciplines. It is hoped that the findings of the
Symposium will be published. The revised dates are 22-23 August, to enable
more people to attend.

The Symposium will be led by Lara Allen, Christine Lucia, Grant Olwage,
Brett Pyper, and Nishlyn Ramanna, who are all core members of the project.
Copies of papers that have been accepted should be sent a month prior to
the Symposium in order to be circulated among all participants.

Please send a Title and Proposal of approximately 300 words by 1 May 2007
to anriette.chorn@wits.ac.za.

The South African Music Project (SAMP) is funded by the National Research
Foundation and falls under their focus area "New Perspectives from the
Global South". The NRF does not however accept liability for any opinions,
findings, conclusions or recommendations emanating from this project.
