The Fall 1997 meeting of the Midwest Chapter will take place in Chicago, October 4-5, at the Ramada Congress Hotel. Chapter members are invited to submit papers on any subject to the Midwest Chapter program committee. The committee will favor submissions from members who have not read papers at Midwest Chapter meetings in the past year. Abstracts should be one to two pages long and explain the originality, methodology, and conclusions of the paper. Proposals should include a list of audio-visual equipment needed and an estimate of the time required to deliver the paper. Note that papers of 20-25 minutes are the norm. Students must send abstracts of at least 2 pages in length (or may send the entire paper) and must also include a brief professional resume. Hackett Ave. Milwaukee, WI 53211-3445 USA Students who wish to compete for the annual prizes for best student papers presented at chapter meetings, offered by Indiana University Press and A-R Editions, must indicate their interest in a cover letter with their abstracts. In order to be considered, students must submit three copies of the complete paper to the program committee no later than the meeting at which they read the paper. More modest accommodations are available at the Cass Hotel, 640 North Wabash Ave. (1-800/227-7850); rates begin at $59 single and are $65 to $84 double. The Cass Hotel is within walking distance of the Ramada Congress Hotel. Cultural events in Chicago during the period of the meeting include the Lyric Opera's productions of Peter Grimes on Friday, October 3, and Nabucco on Saturday, October 4; as performances frequently sell out, check with the box office at +1-312/332-2244, ext. 394, for ticket availability. The Art Institute will host "The Collecting Odyssey," a special exhibit of Indian, Himalayan and Southeast Asian art; call 1-800/929-5800 for further information. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra will open its season on October 4 with an Inaugural Festival featuring Bruckner's Te Deum, Copland's Lincoln Portrait, Beethoven's Symphony no. 5, Daniel Barenboim performing Mozart's Piano Concerto no. 27, and the premiere of Pierre Boulez's Meditations for Orchestra.
