Proposals for papers and/or panels on any aspect of the long eighteenth-century are welcome, but we hope particularly to explore the art, history, economics, politics, architecture, music, fashions, literature, and cuisine of eighteenth-century urban life. Graduate students are welcome. Highlights of the meeting are expected to include Francois Furet on the meaning of the ancien regime; Duncan Macmillan on images of the city in eighteenth-century art; Joan F. Dejean on Moliere, censorship and the book trade; and excursions to the Newberry Library and with Bernadette Fort to the Art Institute of Chicago to view a recently acquired work by Jean-Baptiste Greuze. Participants must be members in good standing of either MWASECS or ECSSS at the time of the meeting; membership forms will be included in the registration materials. The official deadline for proposals is 15 April 1997, but we expect this conference to fill quickly and urge those interested in presenting papers to submit proposals as soon as possible. Proposals for interdisciplinary sessions will be particularly welcome. Proposals for papers of 15-20 minutes should include a title, 300-word abstract, and abbreviated (one-page) cv.
