33rd International Congress on Medieval Studies
Kalamazoo, MI, May 1998

Call for Papers 33rd International Congress on Medieval Studies Kalamazoo, MI (USA) 7-10 May 1998 Encyclopedias, Their Users, and Uses
The continuing project to translate Vincent de Beauvais' encyclopedia, recent French and German publications on Bartholomaeus Anglicus' encyclopedia, the Dutch pre-modern encyclopedic centre, and more have been drawing researchers' attention to these texts, which flourished in the early Middle Ages and then prompted a spate of new works in the 13th century. The reason for the long tradition of copying Isidore and Hrabanus Maurus and then for the creation of new encyclopedias by Vincent and Bartholomew is not yet clear, and the audiences of the older and newer works have not been investigated very thoroughly. This session is intended to provide a forum for such discussions. Speakers: 3 at 20 minutes apiece, or 4 at 15 Deadlines: 10 September 1997 for abstracts of proposals 1 January 1998 for drafts of accepted papers (I *will* time them when I read them) Contact: Juris G.
