International Music Council of U.N.E.S.C.O. Congress in Aarhus, Denmark 2-5 July 1998 Music Education in a Multicultural Society Press Release - May 1998 Because of the diversity and pluralism of music environments, managers and educators must be able to make sense of and use multiple cultural perspectives and learn to bring their own musical capacities to bear in action and interaction with a wide range of music cultures. The 2-5 July 1998 IMC of UNESCO Congress, "Music Education in a Multicultural Society" includes lectures, demonstrations, and concerts by leading scholars, educators, and musicians from Africa, America, Asia, and Europe who will share perspectives on cultural diversity in music and music education from all over the world. The opening concert, including young musicians from 21 nations, will be broadcasted all over Europe by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). All lecture sessions comprise discussions in which the Congress participants will bring their knowledge and viewpoints to the attention of the congress. All questions, comments, and statements will be considered for inclusion in the written report published after the Congress. The Congress is under the patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Alexandra of Denmark and hosted by the Danish Music Council in association with the County of Aarhus, Danish Musicians Union, and the Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen.
