Music Education in a Multicultural Society

Press Release - May 1998

Because of the diversity and pluralism of music environments, managers and
educators must be able to make sense of and use multiple cultural
perspectives and learn to bring their own musical capacities to bear in
action and interaction with a wide range of music cultures.

The 2-5 July 1998 IMC of UNESCO Congress, "Music Education in a
Multicultural Society" includes lectures, demonstrations, and concerts by
leading scholars, educators, and musicians from Africa, America, Asia, and
Europe who will share perspectives on cultural diversity in music and
music education from all over the world. The opening concert, including
young musicians from 21 nations, will be broadcasted all over Europe by
the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).

All lecture sessions comprise discussions in which the Congress
participants will bring their knowledge and viewpoints to the attention of
the congress. All questions, comments, and statements will be considered
for inclusion in the written report published after the Congress.

The Congress is under the patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess
Alexandra of Denmark and hosted by the Danish Music Council in association
with the County of Aarhus, Danish Musicians Union, and the Rhythmic Music
Conservatory in Copenhagen.

Music Education in a Multicultural Society welcomes music educators,
musicians, politicians, media people and everybody interested in music,
education, and multiculture.
