An Interdisciplinary Conference

CALL for PAPERS

KEYNOTE SPEAKER

Krin Gabbard
http://ccmail.sunysb.edu/complit/gabbard.htm
Professor of Comparative Literature
State University of New York, Stony Brook

Keynote Address

"jazz" - instability of meanings; the crucial importance of jazz in
American culture, and the "misuse" of jazz in cultural production, with
reference to the use of the jazz vocalist Johnny Hartman in the film The
Bridges of Madison County

Regular Paper

Marlon Brando's work in Streetcar Named Desire as a kind of "jazz"
performance, not just in terms of how Brando seems to be improvising but
also in terms of how he performs his masculinity. The paper connects jazz
with the Method Actors of the 1940s and 50s in terms of a shared
fascination with black male sexuality, psychoanalysis, spontaneity, and
rejection of bourgeois values.
