******************************************************************** THE MUSIC OF AMY BEACH: A Cross-Disciplinary Conference _________________________________ Jointly sponsored by Mannes College of Music - Joel Lester, Dean and The Doctoral Program in Music of the Graduate School and University Center of CUNY - Allan Atlas, Executive Officer __________________________________ "THE MUSIC OF AMY BEACH: an Interdisciplinary Conference" will be held at Mannes College of Music in New York City on Sunday, December 5, 1999. The conference, which is sponsored jointly by Mannes and CUNY, will combine the efforts of musicologists, music theorists, and performers in exploring the output of this important American composer. A series of panels will each focus on a specific composition of Beach's, discussing it from stylistic, historical, and analytic perspectives. Among the works that will be examined at length are the Ballade; the Theme and Variations for Flute Quintet; the Browning Songs; the Piano Quintet; the String Quartet; and the Canticle of the Sun. Speakers and panelists will include various scholars and experts on Amy Beach's music, including Adrienne Fried Block, Laurie Blunsom, Betty Buchanan, Susan Borwick, Stephen Burnaman, Steven Bruns, Cynthia Folio, Walter Frisch, Ellie Hisama, Judy Lochhead, Carol Matthews, Nancy Rao, Wayne Schneider, Judith Tick, and Carol Treybig. Performances of these and other works will be featured both throughout the day and during an evening concert. The performers include a number of distinguished musicians and leading interpreters of Beach's music: pianists Joanne Polk, Peter Basquin, Carol Goff, and Sylvia Kahan; vocalists Mary Katherine Kelton, Rufus Hallmark, and Monica Zerbe; and the award-winning Harid String Quartet.
