THE MUSIC OF NATURE: SOUND IMITATION IN RITUAL AND ART
The Department of the Organology program “Voice in Culture” continues the research project in connection with the idea of music of nature and nature in music. The focus of this conference – the phenomenon of the imitation of nature as the foundations of art.
This project includes:
Preparation and publication of a collection of scholarly articles
The conference entitled “Music of Nature: Sound Imitation in Ritual and Art”
Topics of Discussion:
1. Mimesis in poetics and music
2. Elements of nature and music
3. Landscapes and the sounds of music
4. The cosmos and music
5. Flora and fauna and musical symbolism
6. Contemporary musical technologies as instruments of musical imitation
7. Musical instruments and the image of the world
The conference will be held October 10, in the Institute’s Green Hall
(Isaakievskaya 5, St Petersburg, Russia)
Forms of participation: paper presentation (15 min.), lecture (45 min.), presentation of video- and audio materials, master-class.
By May 15, 2011 – proposal: first name, last name, middle name; educational degree; place of work and position; address; e-mail address; field of study; form of participation; topic.
By May 30, 2011 – material for publication (up to 20,000 characters, including spaces, endnotes, and bibliography; without illustrations and musical examples), summary in English and Russian (up to 250 characters). The organizational committee retains the right to select only those papers that best relate to the themes of the conference.
