International Conference on Sacred Music

The Department of Music within Emanuel University of Oradea (Romania) in cooperation with Emanuel University Press and the <Religion and Science> Research Centre organize the International Conference on Sacred Music and the Ars Sacra International Festival that will take place in Oradea between December 12-17, 2013.

The conference committee invites all academics and university professionals, composers, musicologists, and practitioners with a special interest in the relationship between Christianity and music to submit proposals related specifically to this issue.

We are especially interested in the variety of approaches to the subject, including: theory and musical analysis, aesthetics, history, liturgy, hymnology, archetypology, musical interpretation, conducting, theology, philosophy, psychology, music therapy, education, ethnomusicology, sociology, politics, and science.

Presentations may consist of individual papers (20 minutes) and lecture-recitals (40 minutes).

Those interested are encouraged to send proposals up to 500 words (excluding musical examples) via email to Madalina Hotoran, PhD (Associate Professor, Emanuel University) at

In addition, proposals should also include the following details:

  • Full title of the paper
  • Full name, contact details (email address, telephone number, postal address), and institutional affiliation (if any)
  • A short Curriculum Vitae (maximum 150 words)
  • Audio/visual requirements

 The deadline for receipt of proposals is October 15. The committee’s decision will be announced by the beginning of November.

The accepted papers will be published in a volume after the conference. All papers should have a minimum length of 3.000 (three thousand) words in MS Word file. Footnotes and references should be written according to the latest edition of Chicago Manual of Style. The papers will include: name and affiliation of the participant, a 500 word abstract describing the purpose and orientation of the article and 5 key words. Musical examples must be in good quality (300 dpi), B&W. The accepted language is English and the text must not require additional language editing. Participants should send their abstracts and papers by March 1, 2013. A fee of Euro 25 will be required for the publication of accepted articles.
