The 54thAnnual Conference of the Royal Musical Association (RMA) will take place at the Department of Music, University of Bristol, from Thursday 13thto Saturday 15thSeptember 2018, and registration is open at the conference website

The RMA Annual Conference aims to celebrate the quality and diversity of current scholarship and research in music by bringing together as many scholars and musicians as possible from home and abroad with an interest in the investigation and discussion of the subject’s many branches. The 2018 Annual Conference will present 93 individual papers, 4 lecture-recitals and 13 themed sessions, with topics ranging from Old Hispanic chant to current UK grime and hip hop.

The Department of Music at Bristol is keen to integrate composition, performance and musicology in its teaching and other activities, and in addition to the call for papers, themed sessions and lecture-recitals, we also issued calls for electroacoustic and acoustic compositions. The results of these will be presented in an electroacoustic concert by BULO(the University of Bristol Loudspeaker Orchestra), led by Neal Farwell, on the evening of Thursday, 13thSeptember, and an acoustic concert by members of the Bristol Ensemble, led by John Pickard, on the evening of Friday, 14thSeptember.

The recipient of the Dent Medal of the RMA is Alejandro L. Madrid(Cornell University), who will give a keynote lecture on The importance of being from ‘the other side’: music and border studies in the 21stcenturyon Friday, 14thSeptember. The Le Huray lecture will be given by Robert Adlington(University of Huddersfield), who will speak about Democracy in action? Audience participation as community organising on Thursday, 13thSeptember.

The conference will take place in the Victoria Rooms, the Music Department’s neoclassical home, built as assembly rooms in 1842. The location gives easy access to many of Bristol’s museums, music venues and a wealth of restaurants, cafés, bars etc. Information about musical and other cultural events and about places for eating, drinking and socialising will be posted on the conference website closer to the date of the conference.
