“Cardinal Cisneros and Music” Symposium – El cardenal Cisneros y la Música

The International Music Festival “El Greco en Toledo” organizes a Symposium of Musicology entitled “Cardinal Cisneros and Music”, next 27th to 29th September in collaboration with Toledo Cathedral (Spain). The director is José María Domínguez (University of La Rioja) and Tess Knighton is in charge of the scientific organization. Major scholars on Music, History, Printing and Culture of the Spanish Renaissance will meet to present recent research and discuss on Music around cardinal Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros (1436-1517). The event features kenotes by Professors Susan Boynton (Columbia University) and Juan Carlos Asensio (ESMUC – Barcelona). Six sessions and a round table will conform the program, focusing on issues as: Mozarabic chant, choirbooks and liturgical imprints, material culture and musical patronage by archbishops, religious orders and reformism and, finally, Toledo cathedral at the time of the Cardinal. The Symposium will be held in historical venues related to Cisneros: the Cathedral, Lorenzana palace, the Conservatorio (former monastery of San Juan de la Penitencia founded by the prelate) and the mozarabic church of Santa Eulalia where a mozarabic sung mass is scheduled. A closing concert by Schola Antiqua will take place in the cathedral. The language of the Symposium will be Spanish.
