The University of York Music Department is delighted to host its second Music Education conference: 

‘Connections and Communication in Instrumental and Vocal Teaching’.

This event will bring together teachers, researchers, and performers to explore connections and communication in instrumental and vocal music teaching. This topic can be approached in numerous ways and we welcome submissions from students and professionals who have related views and experience. There will be a balance of practical and theoretical submissions across the two days and we are keen to support early career professionals as well as students, independent scholars and music teachers.

The conference will take place on Tuesday 26th June and Wednesday 27th June 2018 in The Rymer Auditorium at the University of York (see travel information page for further details on the venue and access).

The event is organised by staff and students on the MA in Music Education: Instrumental and Vocal Teaching, at the University of York.

The conference topic is intentionally broad to encourage submissions from a range of perspectives. To facilitate this, four session types will be considered: 20-minute spoken presentations, poster presentations, 40-minute practical sessions, and 60-minute ‘diverse format’ sessions.

 “Musicology (in)action: Past musics, present practices, future prospects”

 Thessaloniki, 9 – 11 February 2018

 The Department of Music Studies of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the Department of Music Science and Art of the University of Macedonia will host, under the auspices of the Hellenic Musicological Society, an international conference for PhD students entitled “Musicology (in)action: Past musics, present practices, future prospects” in Thessaloniki, Greece, from 9 to 11 of February 2018.

 

Call for papers

In recent years, musicology has tested its boundaries, objects of study, and, indeed, prospected future through the constant questioning of its subfields, themes, and methodological underpinnings. At the same time, this interrogative process has also been one of constant development of new, often interdisciplinary methodological approaches, frequently extending their grasp on new or hitherto neglected musical repertoires. It is this ambiguous state of conditions that the novice in the field of musicological research faces in her/his everyday effort to situate her/his own research within a constantly changing disciplinary environment. This conference aims to bring together fresh ideas of new researchers in an attempt to help them secure their position with respect to the ongoing discourse of musicology’s saga and with an eye to the future prospects of the field.

 

We welcome proposals of PhD students for 20-minute paper presentations or 40- to 80-minute panel presentations (of up to four participants), addressing a variety of old and new(er) research topics from the broad field of musicology (e.g. historical and cultural musicology, music theory and analysis, ethnomusicology and musical anthropology, music psychology, computational musicology, music philosophy and aesthetics). Proposals on topics that cross the strict intra- or inter-disciplinary boundaries of musicology are also welcomed.

Aims of the workshop: to encourage interdisciplinary communication and collaboration of linguists, musicians and IT-specialists in the sphere of some actual problems, among which are the following:
1. Language and music acquisition; influence of music skills on language acquisition and language processing; influence of linguistic skills on music acquisition; relationship between music and language training.
2. Linguistic and music knowledge, their structure and functioning; explicit and implicit knowledge of music and language; similarities and differences in understanding of music and language.
3. Automatic classification of linguistic and music knowledge; formal models of linguistic and music knowledge; musical information retrieval vs. linguistic information retrieval.

This year special topics of the workshop are:

Abstracts from different fields are warmly invited. Presentations will last 20 minutes, followed by a ten minute discussion. Abstracts should be submitted before November 27, 2016. Notification of acceptance follows on January 20, 2017. Abstracts should be 450-500 words long (without any subheadings) and clearly present a research question/aim, critical review of the literature, methodology, results and conclusions. Abstracts should be submitted as a pdf. If you wish to include any specific symbols (such as phonetic transcription), please submit your paper both in DOC and PDF format. We have the intention to select papers for a peer-reviewed special issue.

International Conference of Young Musicologists. Young Musicology Today: tendencies, challenges and perspectives

The aim of the conference is to integrate the musicological community through the creation of an international forum for exchanging ideas and research experiences. We encourage young musicologists to present results from ongoing studies and to engage in discussion on the future of musicology, its role and place in the contemporary culture. Currently, musicology, which is not only the study of music, is starting to perform social functions, becoming not only a field of scientific inquiry but one of use to society. During the conference, we would like to consider new avenues of research, new methodologies of musicologists’ work, and the challenges and career prospects faced by musicologists entering the labour market. It will also be an opportunity to consider the subject areas of interest to young musicology.

  • Music in the public space (sonosphere research)
  • Music in society (music and ideologies)
  • Music and the sacred
  • Music and science (e.g. psychology of music)

The conference will incorporate both traditional lectures and panel discussions, during which groups of researchers conducting a joint project or studying similar subjects will be able to present the results of their studies or discuss a specific subject. We encourage the participants to organise their own panel sessions during the conference (due to time constraints, we suggest no more than four papers during one session; please indicate the person leading the session during registration).

In addition, the conference programme includes:

  • “A musicologist on the labour market” panel

This will be an opportunity for an in-depth discussion of the current employment situation of musicology graduates in Poland and abroad, and for the presentation of experiences in this area. We encourage participation in this panel session by musicologists – musical life animators, employees of media and cultural and educational associations and institutions etc.

  • Masters’ lectures (plenary speakers)
  • The conference programme includes additional events, such as concerts, sightseeing in Krakow, and exhibitions.

A publication of the collected papers presented at the conference is also planned.

Choral practice, performance and pedagogy: real world applications of choral research

CALL FOR PAPERS

Department of Music, The University of Sheffield, in partnership with the Institute of Musical Research.

Friday 8th April 2016.

This one-day, interactive choral conference is being convened in the Department of Music at the University of Sheffield, with funding from The Institute of Musical Research. The aim of the event is to provide a forum for researchers to present their work on choral practice, performance and pedagogy. This conference is designed to provide opportunities for demonstrating the impact of current research in a way which emphasizes practical applications alongside pedagogical approaches to choral rehearsal and performance.

Submissions are invited for sessions with a strong participatory element, and potential for a high level of audience engagement. Proposals from Early Career Researchers are particularly encouraged (see below for details of a limited number of travel bursaries which may be awarded to  eligible ECRs).

Sessions may take the form of practical demonstrations, masterclasses, performances or workshops (45 minutes maximum), which are related to the presenter’s original research, or which interrogate choral concepts and philosophies derived from the researcher’s review of the literature. Subjects may include:

  • Choral leadership and conductor training
  • Group dynamics in the choral context
  • Choral learning processes and rehearsal strategies
  • Choral repertoire and performance practices
  • Choral inclusion and diversity
  • Topics related to community singing or community projects involving group singing activities

Shorter spoken papers (20 minutes, including 5 minutes for questions) are also invited, preferably including a practical, participatory or performance element. Subjects for round-table discussions or panels (30 minutes maximum) may also be suggested, with the aim of sharing knowledge, experience, research findings and potential applications among participants. Presentations, demonstrations and workshops may be related to research on group singing in any context, and to any type or size of choral ensemble. A repertoire exchange will be included in the programme, so delegates will be encouraged to bring a song or vocal warm up to share.

Bursaries for Early Career Researchers: There will be a limited number of travel bursaries, funded by the Institute of Musical Research, to assist ECRs to present their work at this conference. Applications for bursaries are encouraged from ECRs who are within three years of completing their PhD, and who do not hold an academic post which provides access to conference funding.

Bursary applications should include:

  • A note of the applicant’s PhD completion date
  • Confirmation that the applicant does not currently have access to funding for conference attendance
  • An accurate indication of the travel costs that will be involved in attending this conference
  • A short biography (c. 200 words)

15th International conference “Principles of Music Composing: Phenomenon of Melody”

This is the15th International Conference “Principles of Music Composing”which will take place in Vilnius, Lithuania during 14-16 October 2015.

This year we are focusing on the phenomenon of melody, as the conference is dedicated to the 140th anniversary of birth of M.K. Čiurlionis, who is renowned for his melodic talent.

Suggested sub-themes:

1. Theoretical conception of the phenomenon of melody:

 a) Differentiation of concepts related to the melody: monody, voice, themes, cantilena, line, horizontal, etc.

b) definition of permanent constants in melody: archetype, structures, functions, communication, etc.

c) analysis of relation between melody and composing principle (compositional entirety), typological schemes

2. Melody in context of European polyphony

3. Differences in paradigms between melody and Eastern monody.

4. Melody in modern compositional practice:

a) new melodic interval relations

b) linearism and verticality

c) melodic rhythm (activation of rhythm)

d) sonorisation of melodic process

5. Melody in the works of contemporary Lithuanian and other Western composers

6. Ethnic melodic features in the works of M.K. Čiurlionis

There have been rapid multidisciplinary advances in scholarly understanding of musical experience over the last fifteen years or so. It is increasingly accepted that musical experiences are multi-faceted, fluctuating, and dynamic; complex composites of cognitive, perceptual, embodied and affective components. One response to the acknowledged phenomenological complexity of musical engagement has been a growing interest in the relationship between music and consciousness.

Following on from the success of the first International Conference on Music and Consciousness (Sheffield, 2006), and the edited volume Music and Consciousness to which this led, this second conference is again intended as a forum for the exchange of perspectives from a broad range of disciplines, including but not restricted to:  neuroscience, psychology, phenomenology, philosophy, sociology, musicology, performance studies, ethnomusicology, music therapy, evolutionary psychology, cognitive archaeology, and cultural history.

The conference will consist entirely of plenary sessions, enabling wide-ranging participation, with significant time set aside for discussion. It will include keynote presentations, papers and short communications.

Call for Papers 

The conference committee welcomes submissions addressing a broad range of themes, including but not limited to the following:

  • Music and Unconsciousness
  • Neural substrates of musical consciousness
  • Consciousness and musical performance
  • Music and trance, flow, absorption, dissociation, and altered states of consciousness (ASC).
  • Theorising musical consciousness – across disciplines, across cultures, across history
