 “Musicology (in)action: Past musics, present practices, future prospects”

 Thessaloniki, 9 – 11 February 2018

 The Department of Music Studies of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the Department of Music Science and Art of the University of Macedonia will host, under the auspices of the Hellenic Musicological Society, an international conference for PhD students entitled “Musicology (in)action: Past musics, present practices, future prospects” in Thessaloniki, Greece, from 9 to 11 of February 2018.

 

Call for papers

In recent years, musicology has tested its boundaries, objects of study, and, indeed, prospected future through the constant questioning of its subfields, themes, and methodological underpinnings. At the same time, this interrogative process has also been one of constant development of new, often interdisciplinary methodological approaches, frequently extending their grasp on new or hitherto neglected musical repertoires. It is this ambiguous state of conditions that the novice in the field of musicological research faces in her/his everyday effort to situate her/his own research within a constantly changing disciplinary environment. This conference aims to bring together fresh ideas of new researchers in an attempt to help them secure their position with respect to the ongoing discourse of musicology’s saga and with an eye to the future prospects of the field.

 

We welcome proposals of PhD students for 20-minute paper presentations or 40- to 80-minute panel presentations (of up to four participants), addressing a variety of old and new(er) research topics from the broad field of musicology (e.g. historical and cultural musicology, music theory and analysis, ethnomusicology and musical anthropology, music psychology, computational musicology, music philosophy and aesthetics). Proposals on topics that cross the strict intra- or inter-disciplinary boundaries of musicology are also welcomed.

Aims of the workshop: to encourage interdisciplinary communication and collaboration of linguists, musicians and IT-specialists in the sphere of some actual problems, among which are the following:
1. Language and music acquisition; influence of music skills on language acquisition and language processing; influence of linguistic skills on music acquisition; relationship between music and language training.
2. Linguistic and music knowledge, their structure and functioning; explicit and implicit knowledge of music and language; similarities and differences in understanding of music and language.
3. Automatic classification of linguistic and music knowledge; formal models of linguistic and music knowledge; musical information retrieval vs. linguistic information retrieval.

This year special topics of the workshop are:
– Formal representation of language and music: differences and similarities
– Sound corpora in music and linguistics

Submission process:

Abstracts from different fields are warmly invited. Presentations will last 20 minutes, followed by a ten minute discussion. Abstracts should be submitted before November 27, 2016. Notification of acceptance follows on January 20, 2017. Abstracts should be 450-500 words long (without any subheadings) and clearly present a research question/aim, critical review of the literature, methodology, results and conclusions. Abstracts should be submitted as a pdf. If you wish to include any specific symbols (such as phonetic transcription), please submit your paper both in DOC and PDF format. We have the intention to select papers for a peer-reviewed special issue.

The twenty-third Annual Conference of the Italian Musicological Society will be hosted in Como from 21th-23rd October, in collaboration with the Conservatory of music “Giuseppe Verdi”. On October 22nd at 3 p.m. the annual Meeting of all members will take place.

 

The Conference will be divided into free paper sessions.

 

Scholars from all over the world are invited to submit their proposals.

 

In your abstract (which has not to exceed 30 lines in word format) please indicate the title of the proposed paper, the state of the art in your research field, with an outline of the project and the specific contribution to the current knowledge. Only original, unpublished research will be taken into consideration: papers in print will not be accepted.

 

Along with the text please send also a short C/V (max. 15 lines) and indicate the A/V equipment required.

 

The paper shall not exceed 20 minutes in duration (corresponding to an 8-page text containing to a maximum of 16000 characters). Scholars are not allowed to send more than one abstract. The twenty-second Annual Conference of the Italian Musicological Society will be hosted in Perugia  from 30th October to 1st  November 2015, in collaboration with the Conservatory of Music “Francesco Morlacchi”. On October 31st at 4 p.m. the annual Meeting of all members will take place .

The Conference will be divided in 4 free paper sessions and 2 theme-oriented sessions about

  1. musical sources and new research topics;
  2. new acquisitions in organology.

Music encoding is now a prominent feature of various areas in musicology and music librarianship. The encoding of symbolic music data provides a foundation for a wide range of scholarship, and over the last several years, has garnered a great deal of attention in the digital humanities. This conference intends to provide an overview of the current state of data modeling, generation, and use, and aims to introduce new perspectives on topics in the fields of traditional and computational musicology, music librarianship, and scholarly editing, as well as in the broader area of digital humanities.

This conference aims to gather specialists in all the above areas, to discuss the current state of modeling, generation and use of music encoding, to exchange experiences, report on successful projects on major collections and composers, and to forge collaborations for future projects.

The program opens on Monday, May 18th with a pre-conference day devoted to workshops/tutorials on MEI and its application to scholarly publication, followed by two days of papers and poster presentations covering various theoretical and practical issues in research and publishing. The program is completed by a “Hack Day” on Thursday, May 21: an opportunity for everyone interested in using and improving MEI — developers, librarians, musicologists, editors, publishers — to investigate the topics they’re most interested in.

This symposium proposes to bring together composers, researchers and practitioners working in contemporary music, and musicologists studying the influence notation has had for composers and performers.
From the problematics of the score as music’s sound-image to the the (im)possibility of transcription, contemporary music has been challenging the role of notation on various levels. Several responses such as non-standard formats of open works, graphic or text-based scores, have today become standard practice. To the extent that new notation seeks to problematize traditional ideologies of music performance, the symposium seeks to address the limits that current notational practices wish to explore, and to throw open possibilities for future endeavours. As such, post-WWII approaches are considered to be part of standard performance practice, although past practices can prove fruitful today in unexpected ways. Especially after the deconstructive turn in philosophy and the arts, music notation has seen novel interpretations, which are particularly welcome, although the symposium is aimed at accommodating all current directions. Recent developments in composition, aesthetics, technology, or performance can inform this gathering, which hopes to constitute a space of thinking today’s notation at the intersection of current research in such fields.

Graphic notation
Relationship between notation and improvisation
New complexity
Aesthetics, philosophy, and notation
Visual music
Interpretation
Word scores

Proposals of up to 300 words are invited for 20 minute presentations with 10 minutes questions. Please also include a short biographical note of around 100 words.

In addition, proposals involving practice are encouraged. These may take the form of a 30 minute presentation split between practice, speaking and questions as desired by the proposer, or pieces which could be performed as concert items. In the case of these presentations, please supply a full list of equipment needed for the presentation/piece.

Simultaneous to, and affiliated with, the symposium will be a study day devoted to the AHRC funded Digital Scores project led by Mick Feltham (University of Sussex) and Alistair Zaldua (Goldsmiths). Depending on the number of applicants this study day may run in parallel with the Notation in Contemporary Music symposium, however a discourse between acoustic notation and digitally determined/influenced notation will be sought and encouraged. In recent decades practice in the notation and performance of new music has continued to innovate and experiment. The nature of notation, its functions and uses as well as performers’ approaches to realisation and interpretation seem as open-ended as ever. In the digital age the dialogue between composer, notation and performer remains vital, and the collaborative process continues to take many forms.

This symposium seeks to discuss and theorise current practice in these areas as well as to deepen our understandings of existing repertoires and traditions within new music, such as experimentalism and minimalism.

Michael Finnissy, Professor of Composition, University of Southampton

Michael Clarke, Professor of Music, University of Huddersfield

Dr Amanda Bayley, Reader in Performing Arts, University of Wolverhampton

We invite presentations on the theme of notation in new music and the relationships between it and composition, collaboration and performance, all understood in their widest sense.

We welcome abstracts from researchers and practitioners for papers in fields such as, but not limited to, music composition, music performance, musicology, music history, music analysis and theory, ethnomusicology, music psychology, the philosophy of music and music education.

We welcome papers or lecture demonstrations.  And we are offering two lengths, either

20 minutes –  plus 5 minutes questions

7 Minutes  – plus 3 minutes questions

We are also calling for composers and performers who wish to present pieces that respond to the conference theme.  Composers will need to supply their own performers.

Please provide a 250-word abstract and any technical specifications for your paper, lecture demonstration or performance.

INTIME 2012 International Student Composition Competition

We invite student (or under 30) composers to submit previously unperformed pieces for solo cello (with or without electronics) to be premiered at the INTIME 2012 Symposium by Madeleine Shapiro. Further performances may be forthcoming at the discretion of Madeleine Shapiro. The winner is expected to attend the Symposium and a bursary of up to £350 to support attendance is available.
