This international one-day symposium on Public Musicology, organized by  the Society for Musicology in Ireland, is in accordance with the aims of that society: to nurture and highlight the role of music in education and broader society on a national and international platform. The aim of this symposium is to ask how musicology relates to the ‘public voice’, the voice of culture at large. At a time when the government is calling for a new level of connectedness between higher education and wider society, academics are under increasing pressure to address this issue of civic engagement. Additionally, as many of our doctoral graduates do not follow an academic career path, there is an urgent need to offer alternative pathways to graduate students forging a career beyond the academy.

Our eleven guest speakers will explore a diverse range of themes: careers in and beyond musicology, community-based projects, curating concerts and issues of programming, musicology in journalism, musicology and civic engagement, music theory, musicological entrepreneurship, public musicology in Ireland, public musicology projects, and musicology and the media. This symposium aims to bring together the published scholar but also the journalist, the writer of programme notes, the teacher, the radio broadcaster and any others in a position to affect the wider discourse on music. The primary objective of the symposium is to raise awareness of how music scholars, educators, music journalists and industry professionals engage with the public at large.

 “Musicology (in)action: Past musics, present practices, future prospects”

 Thessaloniki, 9 – 11 February 2018

 The Department of Music Studies of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the Department of Music Science and Art of the University of Macedonia will host, under the auspices of the Hellenic Musicological Society, an international conference for PhD students entitled “Musicology (in)action: Past musics, present practices, future prospects” in Thessaloniki, Greece, from 9 to 11 of February 2018.

 

Call for papers

In recent years, musicology has tested its boundaries, objects of study, and, indeed, prospected future through the constant questioning of its subfields, themes, and methodological underpinnings. At the same time, this interrogative process has also been one of constant development of new, often interdisciplinary methodological approaches, frequently extending their grasp on new or hitherto neglected musical repertoires. It is this ambiguous state of conditions that the novice in the field of musicological research faces in her/his everyday effort to situate her/his own research within a constantly changing disciplinary environment. This conference aims to bring together fresh ideas of new researchers in an attempt to help them secure their position with respect to the ongoing discourse of musicology’s saga and with an eye to the future prospects of the field.

 

We welcome proposals of PhD students for 20-minute paper presentations or 40- to 80-minute panel presentations (of up to four participants), addressing a variety of old and new(er) research topics from the broad field of musicology (e.g. historical and cultural musicology, music theory and analysis, ethnomusicology and musical anthropology, music psychology, computational musicology, music philosophy and aesthetics). Proposals on topics that cross the strict intra- or inter-disciplinary boundaries of musicology are also welcomed.

International Conference of Young Musicologists. Young Musicology Today: tendencies, challenges and perspectives

The aim of the conference is to integrate the musicological community through the creation of an international forum for exchanging ideas and research experiences. We encourage young musicologists to present results from ongoing studies and to engage in discussion on the future of musicology, its role and place in the contemporary culture. Currently, musicology, which is not only the study of music, is starting to perform social functions, becoming not only a field of scientific inquiry but one of use to society. During the conference, we would like to consider new avenues of research, new methodologies of musicologists’ work, and the challenges and career prospects faced by musicologists entering the labour market. It will also be an opportunity to consider the subject areas of interest to young musicology.

Subject areas for consideration include

  • New research perspectives in musicology
  • Music versus other arts
  • Music in the public space (sonosphere research)
  • Music in society (music and ideologies)
  • Music and the sacred
  • Music and science (e.g. psychology of music)
  • Challenges of modern ethnomusicology
  • The state and the form of contemporary music criticism
  • Source studies and music editing
  • Music librarianship – issues and challenges
  • Performance practice
  • Theory of music
  • Music and pop culture
  • Opera nowadays

The conference will incorporate both traditional lectures and panel discussions, during which groups of researchers conducting a joint project or studying similar subjects will be able to present the results of their studies or discuss a specific subject. We encourage the participants to organise their own panel sessions during the conference (due to time constraints, we suggest no more than four papers during one session; please indicate the person leading the session during registration).

In addition, the conference programme includes:

  • “A musicologist on the labour market” panel

This will be an opportunity for an in-depth discussion of the current employment situation of musicology graduates in Poland and abroad, and for the presentation of experiences in this area. We encourage participation in this panel session by musicologists – musical life animators, employees of media and cultural and educational associations and institutions etc.

  • Masters’ lectures (plenary speakers)
  • The conference programme includes additional events, such as concerts, sightseeing in Krakow, and exhibitions.

A publication of the collected papers presented at the conference is also planned.

The Keele Music Analysis Conference (Wednesday 8 to Friday 10 July 2015, Keele University, UK) welcomes proposals for papers on any aspect of theory, analysis and criticism relating to music and musical practices of any genre, style or period.

Proposals in the following categories will be considered:

– Papers (20 minutes maximum, with 10 minutes for discussion)
– Paper sessions (three or four papers, each of 20 minutes maximum, with 10 minutes per paper for discussion)
– Roundtable discussions (up to 6 participants, each giving a short position paper, followed by a general discussion, total running time of 90 or 120 minutes)
– Recitals, lecture-recitals and lectures illustrated by sound diffusions or audio-visual screenings (maximum duration 90 minutes)

The Editorial Board of Music Analysis will be pleased to discuss publication opportunities with speakers and delegates at the conference.

Proposal Instructions / Guidelines

Abstracts and proposals should be prepared as follows:

– For individual papers: up to 250 words
– For paper sessions: 250-word (maximum) summary and up to 200 words for each session participant
– For roundtable discussions: 250-word (maximum) and up to 150 words for each panel participant
– For recitals, lecture-recitals and lectures illustrated by sound diffusions or audio-visual screenings: 250 word (maximum) summary, plus participant CVs and recordings / scores / other details of works to be included in the event (contact organiser to discuss)

Further information for applicants:

– Only one proposal of each type is permitted per applicant
– Proposals should not substantially duplicate presentations being given at conferences or other events proximate in time or place to KeeleMAC
– All proposals must be sent by email as a MS Word or pdf attachment to keelemac2015@keele.ac.uk.

International Conference on Analyzing Popular Music

An International Conference on Analyzing Popular Music will take place at Liverpool, 2-4 July 2013. Recent work in the analysis of popular music has set compelling new agendas which the conference will debate and celebrate. The conference will explore fundamental questions of theory and analytical method relating to popular music. Among those questions, to what extent are analytical techniques borrowed from the Classical instrumental repertoire appropriate for a music which often displays its complexity in timbre, texture, gesture and persona rather than in melody, harmony or form? What tools and technologies can illuminate the musicality of hip-hop and Indie pop, Björk and Dylan; from bluegrass to dubstep, Abba to Zawinul? Casting its net as broadly as possible across all genres and styles of rock and pop, including jazz and folk, the conference invites papers in topics including but not limited to:

• Modal harmony • Sound design • Narrative • Metre and groove • Voice and vocality • Timbre and texture • Ecological perception • Gesture and embodiment • Theoretical models of analysis • Performance and improvisation • Listening strategies and subject positions • Value, signification, and pedagogy of analysis • Analysis within industry and creative practice • Computational, Neo-Riemannian and spectrum/sonic analysis • Languages and notations of analysis, from the technical to the metaphorical.

A Cerebration of Analysis: IMR London, 21-22 September 2012

This year, Music Analysis  is thirty years old, and the Society for Music Analysis turns twenty one. In honour of this double anniversary, the SMA is holding a symposium titled ‘A Cerebration of Analysis’ at London’s Institute of Musical Research, 21-22 September, featuring some of the foremost names in British music analysis. Topics will range from Schenker studies, through distributed cognition, applied musicology, emotion theory, performance analysis, metrical form, and the New Formenlehre. Speakers will include Julian Horton, John Koslovsky, Elizabeth Eva Leach, Daniel Leech-Wilkinson, Nicholas Marston, Danuta Mirka, Adam Ockelford, Nicholas Reyland, Michael Spitzer, Edward Venn, and Arnold Whittall, and there will be a special Schenker Documents Online session convened by Ian Bent and William Drabkin. The SMA is delighted to welcome Richard Cohn and Jonathan Dunsby as Special Keynote Speakers.
